Varicose vein surgery is almost always performed
on an outpatient basis. Usually patients are released to go
home two to three hours after completion of the surgery.
Varicose vein surgery is reserved for patients having large varicose
veins with incompetent valves. Large veins are removed through a very small
incision, usually less than one-quarter of an inch in length. The scarring
from these incisions is hardly noticeable after a few months.
In these patients, varicose vein surgery offers several advantages over
sclerotherapy treatments. The diseased vein is completely removed, and recovery
time is shorter. Additionally, there is no need for wearing heavy compression stockings.
